The Black Hills contain some of the world’s longest and most complex caves. The two largest caves are the main features of Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument. Some of their rooms and mineral deposits originated more than 300 million years ago as the result of chemical processes soon after the host limestone was deposited. Two more stages of cave enlargement followed, as well as many events that modified them. These caves provide a record of nearly the entire geologic history of the Black Hills, and much previous history as well.
