The Obed Wild and Scenic River, located on the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee, was included in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system to protect the free-flowing quality of the Obed River and portions of two tributary streams. This unit of the National Park System faces challenges related to population growth in the contributing watershed. Despite federal protective status, upstream development continues to affect water quality, quantity, and other resource values within the Wild and Scenic River. Multiple efforts are underway to improve our understanding of the river’s ecosystems and to develop viable solutions for protecting the river while still supporting local communities.
