The US National Park Service includes 401 park units, of which 191 contain or potentially contain caves, karst, and pseudokarst. Only seven of the 191 parks were established to protect caves, but many of the remaining 184 contain and protect important karst and pseudokarst resources. As examples, four parks are reviewed:
• Big Bend National Park: Its pseudokarst cave is regionally significant for its size and origin but internationally significant as habitat for an endangered bat species.
• Wupatki National Monument: Earth cracks in the monument provide unique insights to the local geology while serving as foci for cultural activities and legends.
• Grand Canyon National Park: Speleothem and cave hydrogeologic studies demonstrate new major factors that controlled and date the origin of the canyon.
• Everglades National Park: This park is the core of a tremendously biodiverse area which also provides groundwater to about 5 million people in south Florida. This study illustrates the widespread and multidisciplinary importance of caves, karst, and pseudokarst. While that importance is increasingly recognized, continued growth and awareness is necessary for effect study and management at all parks.
