This volume is devoted to the use of fictional paratexts in 21st-century Spanish literature. It analyses a vast corpus of works in which paratexts (covers, author’s name, prologues, epilogues, textual notes, indexes, appendices, etc., which accompany the text within the book) and epitexts (public or private texts related to the theme of the book, but located outside it) subvert their original pragmatic function to become accomplices in the fiction of the text that they should simply present or comment on to the public and readers. This strategy disrupts the traditional hierarchy between the text (main) and the paratext (accessory and dispensable), but also promotes an aesthetic paradigm of ‘expanded fiction’, in tune with the era of globalisation.
